Project helps farmers with smart tech for climate resilience
Project officials in a function here said farmers affected with climate change would have to be made adaptive with climate change smart agri technologies to keep food production continued aimed at achieving sustainable food security of the country.
“As most of the people of the Gaibandha district live in villages and their main profession and livelihood are fully dependent on agriculture which is seriously affected by the negative impacts of climate change.
Due to changed climatic condition, many members of the affected families go to other parts of the country in search of works being migrated and also try to go abroad for employment illegally to change their lots as a result they are victims of human trafficking. Later on, the victims were brought back to country from abroad through selling land and other properties. In this way, climate affected families are being loser”, they also said.
In this circumstance, there is no alternative to bring the climate affected farmers under adaptation with climate resilient agro technologies aimed at working opportunities to them all the year round to earn economic profit to keep them well, they added.
Taking this in view, a project entitled B-PEMS Augrojatra Climate Change Project has been introduced for the climate affected farmers of Sundarganj, Palashbari and Sadullapur upazilas of the district this year, they further added.
They disclosed it in a project inception workshop held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner (DC) here on Tuesday afternoon.
Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a Gaibandha base non-government development organization, organized the workshop to brief overall activities of the project to the invited participants.
Assistant commissioner and executive magistrate of the DC office Rezaul Islam attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest and assistant police super Abdullah AL- Mamun was present at the event as the special guest while assistant coordinator of GUK Aftab Hossain moderated the function.
Earlier, project manager Irfan Hossain Jony made a presentation on overall objectives and purposes of the project and its design through multimedia projector and said the project would be implemented in the upazilas for the term of 29 months while US department of states and Winrock International would provide the fund.
He also sought wholehearted cooperation of all including district and upazila administrations to make the project a grand success here in the specific time.
Deputy director of the department of agricultural extension here Khorshed Alam Sarker, senior journalists Sarker Mohammad Shahiduzzaman and Abedur Rahman Swapon spoke at the workshop, among others.
Answer to the project relating questions raised by the participants were also given by Mizanur Rahman, regional coordinator of Winrock International during the open discussion session of the workshop.
Chief guest in his concluding speeches gave assurance to provide all sorts of cooperation from the administration to run the project in the upazilas peacefully.
