BSMMU, BUET VCs resign
The vice-chancellors of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University resigned on Sunday.
Four other senior officials of the medical university also resigned the same day.
With the resignation, at least 18 public university vice-chancellors stepped down after the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 amid a mass uprising led by students.
The officials started to submit resignation letters as students at different universities gave them the ultimatum to do so.
Many other senior officials of these universities also resigned so far.
Correspondent at BUET reported that Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology vice-chancellor professor Satya Prasad Majumder on the day submitted his resignation letter to the president Mohammed Shahabuddin through the education ministry.
In his letter, he cited ‘personal reasons’ for the resignation.Professor Satya Prasad Majumder took over as the 14th vice-chancellor of the university in June 2020. He was reappointed for a second term this July.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University vice-chancellor professor Deen Mohd Noorul Huq, pro-vice-chancellor for academic affairs professor Mohammed Atiqur Rahman, pro-vice-chancellor for research and development professor Md Moniruzzaman Khan, registrar professor ABM Abdul Hannan and proctor professor Md Habibur Rahman resigned on Sunday.
The university public relations officer Prosunto Kumer Mazumder confirmed the news.
All educational institutions from secondary to tertiary levels under the education ministry, meanwhile, reopened on Sunday after about a month.
Major public universities, including Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Jahangirnagar University and Rajshahi University, are yet to resume classes and examinations though administrative works are ongoing.
The primary and mass education ministry reopened the educational institutions under it on August 14.
