Southeast Debate Club Host National Debate Competition
The Southeast Debate Club (SEUDC) hosted a successful edition of the National Debate Competition titled “SEUDC Nationals 2024” at the permanent campus of Southeast University on October 18-19, bringing together 48 universities, colleges, and schools.
This year the theme of the competition was “Voice for Resurrection” which was based on the July movement against the autocratic regime. Voice for Resurrection aimed to revive critical discussion regarding the pressing issue of society, politics and global issues.
The event kicked off with an opening ceremony attended by Prof Dr.Farhana Helal Mehtab, Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences and Convenor of SEUDC Nationals 2024. At the beginning all teams showed respect to the July movement martyrs with a minute’s silence.
The debates began on 18 October at 10:00 am in the British Parliamentary format, with intense rounds challenging participants on constitution, socio-political, economic, and global issues. In the final 4 teams participated which were BUP1, BUP2, East West and MIST.
The final debate topic was, "This House regrets the glorification of benevolent dictators." Competitors presented compelling arguments, citing examples from Bangladesh's former autocratic ruler, Hasina, to other dictators around the world, leaving the audience captivated.
The Chief Guest, Md. Asaduzzaman, Attorney General for Bangladesh, and the Special Guest, Judge Shamima Afroze, Senior District Judge of the Nari O Shishu Nirjatan Domon Tribunal, Gazipur, praised the participants for their thoughtful and reasoned arguments.
They also distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up at the conclusion of the competition.
East West University emerged as the champion, while BUP secured the runner-up position. SEUDC Nationals 2024 has successfully fostered logical reasoning, critical thinking, and leadership qualities among students through the power of debate.
