Global day of climate action-2023 was observed at remote char area of Fulchhari upazila in the district on Friday through active participation of the climate victims.
This year’s theme of the day was “We Must End the Era of Fossil Fuel”.
Marking the day, in the support of Manusher Jonno Foundation SKS Foundation, a non-government organization of the country, chalked out the elaborate programmes under Community based Resilience Women’s Empowerment and Action (CREA) project funded by the Embassy of Sweden.
In the morning, a big human chain was formed at Khatiamari char under Fazlupur union of Fulchhari upazila of the district. The people from all walks of life who are seriously affected due to climate change participated in the human chain taking placards, banners and festoons inscribed with negative impacts of climate change.
panel chairman of local union parishad(UP) Moktar Hossain presided over the human chain that was also addressed among others by UP member Beauty Akhter, secretary of climate action group committee Belal Hossain, jubo dal member Magfuza Begum, members of Kishore-Kishori group Sumi Akhter and Sabuz Miah, chair person of Women group Anna Begum, Civil society member Shahin Alam while project coordinator Lovely Khatun moderated the function.
The speakers in their speeches said because of climate change, the livelihood of the people of the grasslands, houses, agricultural crops, livestock, education, health care, employment are constantly being affected.
Now the climate victims are facing frequent and untimely floods, rains and droughts, and they are not getting desired crops from the land as they got earlier.
The tendency of river erosion has increased. Many have lost their cropland and habitat and have taken refuge in other people's houses, they also said.
The poor working people have lost their livelihood and become unemployed and due to these reasons, violence against women and child marriage are increasing. Children are deprived of education and treatment especially the girl children, they added.
The speakers strongly demanded of the government to take necessary measures and possible ways to get rid of these problems and live a healthy life.
They also demanded greater adoption of renewable energy of the rich countries, which had a greater impact on greenhouse gas emission and climate change since industrialization.
Hundreds of affected people coming from different chars of the upazila participated in the human chain spontaneously.
