At least 39 killed in Dhaka restaurant fire

At least 39 people were killed in a fire at a restaurant on Bailey Road in Bangladesh capital Dhaka at the night following Thursday, police said.

A total of 39 bodies were brought to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital from Bailey Road until 2:00am on Friday, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia.

The media cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defence in a message at about 12:45am said that at least three people were found dead and 42 others were rescued in unconscious state during the fire at the restaurant on Bailey Road.

It said that 75 people were rescued alive from the building affected by the fire.

Inspector Bachchu Mia said that most of the unconscious ones were brought dead to the hospitals.

He said that 12 of the injured ones were admitted to DMCH. 

Fire Service headquarters said that they received the news of the fire at Kachchi Bhai Restaurant at about 9:50pm on Thursday.

It said that they rushed to the spot within a few minutes and eight firefighting units were working to douse the fire.

The fire was brought under control at about 11:50pm on Thursday.
