Develop skilled players to brighten image: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for the development of skilled players through proper training to enhance Bangladesh’s image globally.
“Football is immensely popular in Bangladesh, much like the rest of the world. The government remains steadfast in its support for promoting this sport,” she said during a prize distribution ceremony at Bangladesh Army Stadium on Saturday Afternoon, according to state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha or BSS.
The event marked the conclusion of the 'Sheikh Hasina Interbank Football Tournament-2024', organised by the Bangladesh Association of Banks, or BAB, under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army.
Hasina distributed awards after Islami Bank beat Standard Bank 2-0 to win the tournament, the BSS added.
She said her grandfather, father, and brothers were football players, adding, her grandchildren are now playing football.
“Many Bangladeshi athletes represent our country internationally. Sports foster a culture of competition, enabling individuals to prepare themselves to contribute to the country,” she said.
“Bangladesh is making significant strides in this regard, and we must sustain this momentum.”
The prime minister said her government is building Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan, or BKSP, in every division where players of different sports such as football, cricket, hockey, athletics, shooting, chess, volleyball, weightlifting and swimming, can take appropriate training, the BSS added.
She said she finds time in her busy schedule to watch matches from the ongoing Euros and Copa America.
